Trying to Return to College

My name is Ma’Kayla Ja’Nay Howard, and this message serves as an introduction to my educational life, and a guideline as to how I would like my future endeavors to move forward. I am the child of two educators, of which I had the privilege of attending school with them from kindergarten through fifth grade. I developed my work ethic and leadership skills at an early age, and was fortunate to have my parents around to nurture me through that. During this time, I served as student government president, cheerleader, dance participant for 6 years, all while maintaining good grades.
That work ethic at a young age excited me to continue working hard, as I moved forward to middle and high school. I maintained high marks on my report cards, upheld a good reputation among the students and staff, and further developed my strong interest in chorus. I really love to sing and perform, and was excited to be able to attend one of the premier Performing Arts High Schools in Atlanta. With a lot of hard effort, and my parents and teachers to guide me, I balanced my school work, along with community service activities, 4 years of choral performances, and being on the swim team and volleyball team. Even with all that to do, I really enjoyed my time in High School, and I even co-wrote my graduating class’ song, and performed it during the ceremony.
As of my High School graduation date in May of 2016, I had a 4.0 grade average, and was approached by a college recruiter who encouraged me to come to an area college. This college would then provide me with a full scholarship based upon my academic merit. I was so excited to make it into college, and just a few months later, I along with 13 others of my classmates went to this school to further our education. Not soon after, we all realized that some promises that were made to us would not be fulfilled. Not one of us received any scholarship whatsoever, those of us who qualified for it were told that they ran out of money, but we should stay in school and pay tuition out of pocket.
Unfortunately, 13 of my 14 classmates, including myself, ended up having to leave during or at the end of the first semester in college, because we couldn’t afford the cost. A lot of us worked extremely hard throughout high school to be afforded the opportunity for some, if not all of our higher education costs to be subsidized or taken care of. I spent my second semester at home, struggling to find a job to help my parents pay off an enormous college bill, from only a few months of school.
I’m submitting to you, as a patron, to help me pay off this bill, so that I may transfer to a better suited school in the spring of 2018. I cannot transfer anywhere until I get my transcripts from the first school. This can’t happen until I pay off the bill. My parents are working behind the scenes and making sacrifices as necessary. I’m currently trying my best to stay positive while in a state of limbo.
If you find it in your heart to contribute anything toward my cause, please know I will be forever grateful. I honestly have and will continue to work hard in school. I’m actively seeking scholarships and opportunities, but I know I need to get over this first hurdle. I refuse to let a setback write my story. This is only preparing for something greater.
