My name is Victor and I am an addict.
What I'd like to ask for is 28 days. Seems simple but 28 days at a formidable treatment center in California isn't much and yet it is the hardest to acquire. I like so many other Americans am plagued by our healthcare system. I can neither afford the full cost of treatment ($12,000) nor will my insurance, Blue Shield of Covered California with its 3rd party dealer Magellan, allow me to have the full recommended 28 days of treatment.
My life hangs in the balance now as I had to quit my job as an ER Technician (per diem) and stop pursuing my education to become a Nurse. Yes, you heard me correctly. I save peoples lives and after 3 years at a Top 5 hospital I was diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder and Bipolar disorder. Now the very system that I diligently worked for can't help me in my darkest moment.
Why give money to an addict that you don't know? I've been pondering the same question myself. I, too, have come to that same pause. I could sit here and pour my heart out on paper, but honestly, I have nothing to say for myself other than I want another chance at life. What if people did not have to hit "rock bottom" when all they needed was the right treatment. I have never had the chance to look my conditions clinically and with the licensed & certified staff that could help me. I just the need the resources to get back on my feet so I can continue helping other people. Recovery and change is possible.
