Help Me Get To The TACD Teach In

There are currently about 3,000 children imprisoned in the detention camp in Tornillo, TX. According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, their basic needs are being met, but they are not allowing people in to independently verify that. This camp was originally designed to hold about 400 children. Now more than seven times that are being held there on an indefinite basis. The psychological consensus is that incarceration causes long-term damage to children. On top of this, these children are not given access to a quality education.

To highlight the damage done to children in detention a group called Teachers Against Child Detention is planning a teach-in at the camp. TACD was started by a group of teachers led by 2018 National Teacher of the Year, Mandy Manning. We will travel to Texas over presidents day weekend and demand access to teach the children inside the camp.

There are almost certainly children with disabilities among the incarcerated children. These children need access to extensive special education services but, failing that they at least need to be allowed to be seen by highly qualified teachers and special educators like me. I would like to go to provide specialized support to these children and educate people on their unique needs. But on a teacher's salary I can't afford a trip like this alone. I need your help to cover the travel expenses.

There is a history of those in charge preventing access to these detention camps, so it is possible that we will not be allowed inside. If that is the case, we will hold a demonstration where we will conduct a 24 hour livestream teaching about the horrors of child detention.

In the interest of transparency here is what I intend to spend the money on and the estimated costs:

Flights (round trip): $450
Hotel (3 nights) : $150
Car rental (to get from El Paso to Tornillo): $100

If any money is left over, I plan to use it for food and incidentals during the trip. Anything beyond that will be donated either to TACD or an organization benefiting migrants.

Thank you for your help.
