Mulberry Project: a historic legacy with a future

Tax deductible
With your help, we can turn the tide of apathy that has led to the decline of a historic and architectural asset, the prior Mulberry 2nd Presbyterian church in Wilkinsburg.  The time is now!

The call to action for this GoFundMe Campaign is the stabilization of  the historic Mulberry 2nd Presbyterian Church, which will be repurposed as a community center and will contribute to the revitilization of the Wilkinsburg community.  A full roof replacement is planned for 2020 – 2021 but rain and snow cannot continue to cause interior damage in the interim.  We must stabilize the roof and close the open windows.

The Mulberry 2nd Presbyterian church was established in 1903 in the village of Wilkinsburg. The church’s congregation of 228 members grew to a prosperous 2136 members by 1947. The children’s division of the church served 522 students, in 24 classrooms and a gym, making it 1 of 3 of the largest church schools in the state.

Everyday 20,000 vehicles (PennDOT, May 2014)  travel Penn Avenue and South Avenue, but few travelers stop to shop. The MLK bus station serves approx. 3500 people.  However, the flow of traffic through the business district does little to mitigate the struggling business district. 35% of the store fronts are empty.

The Mulberry Project will be a destination point in Wilkinburg's business district.  There is opportunity for a cluster of diverse educational and job training enterprises, to foster local economic redevelopment. The building offers an industrial-sized kitchen and 2 smaller kitchens, multiple lots for urban gardening, recreational areas, a 24 classroom school, a performance space, a variety of offices, ample safe parking, and accessibility to the MLK busway, Interstate 376, and Penn Avenue.

No donation is too small.  Wilkinsburg is on the cusp of transformation. Be a part of the change and support the Mulberry Project today.
