Yukon 1000: Emma and Mitzi Edition

Donation protected
*Please note that our goal has changed due to better information on the estimated cost of transportation, food, safety equipment, and gear purchase/rental.

In July of 2014, Emma and Mitzi plan on paddling 1000 miles of the Yukon river as the first female team to ever enter (and hopefully finish!) the Yukon 1000: the world's longest canoe and kayak race. Their goals? To prove to themselves that they can compete in a race much greater than they ever could have imagined, and to show the paddling community that wilderness travels and hardcore races aren't just for the boys. They need your help to do this!

Meet Emma Burgeson and Mitzi Peine: avid paddlers, explorers, and lovers of the wilderness. Emma and Mitzi met through YMCA Camp Widjiwagan on a 6-week Anderson River canoe trip in the Canadian Arctic in 2010. They have since been spotted adventuring in Alaska, Washington, Wisconsin, and of course, their mother land of Minnesota. When they aren't exploring together, Mitzi and Emma can be found at their respective colleges. Mitzi is studying Outdoor Education at Northland College in Ashland, WI and Emma is studying Environmental Science at Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA. Both will be graduating in the spring of 2014 and hope to find jobs making the world a better place (job offers are also welcome).

Donations in any amount are greatly appreciated. Money raised will go to the costs of food, transportation and safety equipment purchases/rentals. They have a lot of the necessary gear, but there are a few items (such as a SPOT safety device and a racing canoe rental) that quickly increase the price of the race. Any additional funds will be donated to The Ann Bancroft Foundation.
