It is a proven fact that education is the foundation for lifting communities out of poverty. At the Second Annual Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa Gala, we met an 8 year old girl who had never been to school. We learned about a young woman who dropped out of college her sophomore year because she couldn't afford the $80USD per year tuition. She worked for two years and still could not accumulate the $240USD she needed to graduate.
Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa, founded by 2011 Nobel Laureate Leymah Gbowee, works tirelessly to change the outcome for women and girls in Liberia through comprehensive scholarships that cover housing, transportation, supplies and food for primary school and college scholars, as well as confidence and community building programs.
On Jan. 31st, Leymah Gbowee proudly announced an ambitious effort to raise $3M USD in one year to support the building and operation of the AED Technical Institute for Girls in Liberia. This institute will serve as a beacon of light to young girls, teaching technology, trades applicable in today's society, confidence building and serving as a community and wellness center.
To kick off the fundraising, a donor has pledged to match $100k. We have already made large strides in this goal, raising $50k in two days through local Liberian business leaders. Help us reach our goal.
About Leymah Gbowee
2011 Nobel Peace Laureate Leymah Gbowee is a Liberian peace activist, trained social worker, public speaker, and women's rights advocate. She is founder and current President of the Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa. She also founded the Liberia Reconciliation Initiative and is co-Founder and former Executive Director of Women Peace and Security Network Africa (WIPSEN-A). She is also a founding member and former Liberia Coordinator of Women in Peacebuilding Network/West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WIPNET/WANEP).
