Algonquin Park Wolf Tracking Trip

Dear Family, Friends, Students and Parents,
White Pine Program’s 2015 Algonquin Park Tracking Trip is a once in a lifetime chance for Deneen and I to track wolves in the wild. As you may know, Deneen and I have been studying wildlife tracking for many years, having completed White Pine’s Wildlife Tracking Apprenticeship Program in 2011. We are dedicated to creating a connection to the Natural world in part by understanding what is left behind by the passage of animals and their effect on their environments. We are also dedicated to sharing this connection and knowledge through teaching and mentoring.
It is a lifelong dream of mine to be in the forest with wild wolves, follow their tracks and hopefully hear their howls. As a child, I was obsessed with wolves, reading books, watching documentaries and listening to recordings of them singing to each other. My reports and art projects in school often focused on wolves.
In college, I happened to befriend a fellow student who's parents (unbeknownst to me) ran Wolf Hollow in Ipswich, Massachusetts, an educational facility where the public could observe wolves in a large inclosure. I spent a great deal of time here with these animals, even helping to raise two new pups. This amazing opportunity fulfilled one dream, face to face with wolves (literally as they greeted me by putting their paws on my shoulders and licking my face.) While there I learned how they communicated, watched pack dynamics in action and experienced the relationships these powerful creatures had with people. Above is a picture of me with Osha on a return visit to Wolf Hollow a few years ago.
Deneen’s story is a bit different. She craves a connection with Nature as an essential element in living. Yes, like food or water. She dreams of experiencing time in large wilderness with an abundance of life unaffected by roads and human development. To track wildlife with expert guides and educators, to unravel mysteries and share stories, Deneen’s hope is that the intimate time in Nature will be shared by all on the tracking expedition. This connection to Nature grows into a connection with peers and later at home to be shared in community fellowship through play and mentoring. To be in the wild is to be well.
Going to Algonquin Park with White Pine Programs will put us in an immense forest with free living wolves and expert tracking instructors. They have been leading these trips for 15 years. Their participants have had amazing experiences there, tracking wolves, moose, martens, otters and many more animals. Deneen and I will bring this experience back home with us, to share our additional skills in tracking and Nature awareness with all of our students. Most importantly, when I tell my students about adventures I have had, their eyes light up. If I, someone they know, has had an amazing adventure in Nature, fulfilling a dream, they understand they can to. Aiding our participation in the Algonquin Park Tracking Trip will help us be better mentors and inspire our students.
