Olive needs treatment to recover from abusive backyard breeder
Meet Olive, the newest rescue to Coveted Canines Rescue. She is one of the sweetest, cutest, loveliest, and kindest dogs you will ever meet! Unfortunately, this little darling needs surgery and here’s why.
Olive was dumped on a Toronto street when she was no longer useful to the backyard breeder who profited off her little body. Olive likely produced many offspring, litter after litter, that garnered much income. The scars on her belly tell the history of previous c-sections, but she was never spayed. Her ears were so infected that thick scar tissue formed from chronic infections, almost filling her canals. Her feet are deformed, likely broken at the ankles and never addressed by a vet. She can barely walk and has clearly been through years of pain and suffering.
We started this campaign for two reasons:
1. To pay for Olive’s treatment. The money raised will go directly to her treatment, which is currently $4500 (this includes extensive screenings, medications, orthopaedic specialist consult, custom brace for left leg). Depending on the success of the first round of treatments, Olive may be able to have surgery. Full treatment plan is listed at the bottom.
2. To raise awareness of the problem of puppy mills and backyard breeders. Please do not buy puppies off Kijiji. You might not think it’s an issue – “Covid is hard”, “the kids NEED something NOW”, “many people ‘rescue’ puppies off Kijiji right”? Your new puppy may have the best home, but what about the parents? What kind of hell were they living in for you to have a puppy? Dogs like Olive are the cost. Dogs that have been stuck in a life of perpetual breeding, pain, suffering, and in consequence who may end up as a laboratory test or a bait dog in an illegal dog fighting ring. Please do your research. Learn what pet is best suited for you and the commitment required. If the answer is a dog, please get one from a rescue or other reputable source.
Dogs love us unconditionally and they deserve the same in return: a family who loves them and a good home for their whole life. With your help, Olive has the chance at a happy and healthy life.

Olive’s full treatment plan:
Olive has been diagnosed with immune mediated polyarthritis (IMPA). This condition causes severe inflammation in the joints with lameness, pain and bony changes. She may be a candidate for surgery of her left forelimb but we need to get the inflammation under control and stable before we can consider surgery. After extensive diagnostics our plan is as follows.
We will be starting her on 3 medications:
1) Prednisone: this medication (steroid) will help suppress the immune system and reduce the inflammation in the joints. It should as a result help reduce pain. We start at an immunosuppressive dose to get the disease under control and then we slowly try to wean this down as we don't like to keep dogs on high doses of steroids long term.
2) Omeprazole: this medication help prevent gastrointestinal ulceration that can occur when dogs start steroids.
3) Tramadol: this is a straightforward pain medication. We can increase the dose if needed and even add in more pain medication if needed.
The surgical specialist at Animal Health Partners has suggested that obtaining a brace for her forelimbs might be beneficial for her. Many dogs dislike wearing braces so we will start with a brace for her left front limb (most severe) and see how she does with it.
If all goes well there is a chance for surgery to correct her left leg but the cost is estimated at between $5600-6400. This won’t be until Olive is stabilized.

Specialist findings- Animal Health Partners
*Forelimbs: Severe bilateral carpal and metacarpal joint laxity with subluxation of both carpi, left worse than right. *Severe joint effusion with severely limited range of motion and pain on flexion of both elbows with joint effusion.
*Severe bilateral stifle laxity with RPL unstable mediolaterally as well as craniocaudal drawer.
*Bilateral grade 4 MPL.
*IMPA is present.
*Severe disease in multiple joints.
*Olive has had untreated IMPA for years. The problem with untreated polyarthritis is that not only does the cartilage break down in joints, it also attacks the ligaments which causes the subluxation of major joints. Typically this is progressive.
*Worst joint appears to be the left wrist, which we can fuse with an arthrodesis. However, the concern is that the other joints will continue to break down over time.
*Ideally this pet at this moment in time would need bilateral carpal arthrodeses, bilateral TPLOs, and an augmented procedure to address mediolateral instability in the knees. *The overall prognosis for this patient is very poor. Alternative options include external copatation in the form of braces/splints.
