Hi there, for those of you who don’t know me, I am constable Scott Jarvie, Operational Support Division, Police Scotland Mounted Unit.Sadly my 26 year old son, Alex was diagnosed with a rare type of testicular cancer in November 2017. Alex worked as a personal trainer for a large state-of-the-art fitness club, Movati Leisure, based in Ottawa, Canada. A young healthy man at the peak of his life and fitness. The aggressive cancer had metastasised into his abdominal lymph nodes causing them to tumour and disrupt his lymphatic system. He was classed as stage 3C with a 30% chance of survival. A 3 month intensive chemotherapy treatment regime was agreed following consultation with Lance Armstrong’s oncologist. I was with Alex throughout the roller coaster journey, the hair loss, sickness, nausea and weakness. In March 2018 a follow-up CT scan revealed that a slow growing teratoma cancer had now taken hold of the lymph nodes around his, bowel, lungs and aorta. This condition was deemed to be an extremely rare scenario with Alex being only the 6th person in medical history to have been diagnosed at that level. The CT scan was sent to the worlds leading oncology surgeons in order to formulate a plan to tackle the complex distribution of the tumours. The teratoma cancer could not be treated by means of chemotherapy or radiation, surgical removal was the only option. In April 2018 an extremely challenging 20 hour operation was carried out in Ottawa by 4 of the worlds leading oncology surgeons. The procedure was deemed to be ground breaking and hailed a success when all the vital organs were saved and follow up scans failed to show any remaining cancer. With this apparently miraculous result, Alex was determined to once again focus on his training and use his unique experience to help inspire cancer survivors regain their fitness levels. On 6th December 2018 Alex again began to feel unwell and was admitted to hospital suffering from lower abdominal pain. Unfortunately after in-depth CT and MRI scans it was realised that the teratoma cancer had resurfaced at an aggressive level. The main aortic blood supply to Alex’s bowel, kidneys and pancreas has been compromised by the tumours to a level not seen before. Due to the complexity of these unique circumstances, specialist oncologists are, at present, attempting to establish whether surgery may even be an option this time round. It’s at this juncture that I am reaching out to all my colleagues throughout Police Scotland.I am hoping that you can find it in your hearts to donate whatever you can to help support Alex through this very uncertain journey ahead. Medical expenses and the cost of surviving are going to weigh heavily in the future days and months. I respectfully request that you share this page with all our fellow colleagues throughout Police Scotland.Thank you.
