Stem Cell Transplant

July 19, 2013 is a day I will never forget. It was the day my husband Dwayne was diagnosed with Plasmacytoma after undergoing back surgery. He was referred to the South Carolina Oncology Associates. After getting the results of the bone biopsy it was confirmend that the cancer had already progressed to Multiple Myeloma, affecting the immune system through interface with the production of normal blood cells. While this is relatively common in older people, it is not usually found in someone that is 44 years old.
Dwayne has been doing chemotherapy/radiation treatment six times a month since July 2013. While he responded well to conventional therapy, it was determined he was eligible for a stem cell transplant, which would improve the quality of life and prolong his survival.
The Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston can carry out the transplant but this will require us to be away from home for the treatment period of 4 - 6 weeks. The cost of the transplant is $135,000, with us being responsible for 10%. This unfortunately does not include the cost of the accompanying therapy and co-medication for the transplant to be effective, and which is needed to help stimulate stem cell growth. It also does not include housing, food, and other incindentals during the required 4 - 6 that we need to be close to the hospital for treatments, and in case of complications.
We have exhaused our own funds with the initial treatments, since then lost our jobs, while being unable to return to
full-time employment for the duration of the treatment.
We are asking for donations to contribute towards medical treatment, co-medications, lodging, food, and any other incidentals that might arise.
