cody ernst was your average carefree fun loving 17 year old teenager. an avid fisherman and new england patriots fan. he was enjoying his senior year in high school and looking forward to a bright future. he had interests in becoming a nurse or computer networker. cody loved animals and animals loved cody. he was doing his best to be a role model for his 2 younger brothers. cody was working his first job were he often received praise for being such a respectable hard working young man. he was making his parent's very proud. cody had such a bright future ahead of him. then on the night of december 15, 2013 cody was involved in a tragic car accident that would alter his life and his families forever. he was a backseat passenger in a friends car when the accident occurred. cody was transported to the closest hospital. he was brought in as a trauma. after arrival they discovered the extent of his injuries. the car accident left cody with traumatic brain injury to 2 parts of his brain. the damaged caused will be long term. during his time in the hospital he has had several surgeries and also endured a stroke. cody was in a coma for several weeks due to the injury and swelling to the brain. he has recently woken up . his road to recovery is uncertain and long term. currently he does open his eyes, but has no ability to communicate, walk, sit up, eat food, or move his left side. he is presently in hospital in patient rehab. however this program is only 2-3 weeks on average. after that it is up to his family to decide where he goes and the care he gets.Unfortunately South Florida doesnt have many resources for people who suffer from Traumatic Brain Injury. And the resources they do have Cody doesnt qualify for . He doesnt qualify because he hasnt progressed enough. Cody will fall between the cracks in care. he will need a drastic amount of therapy to hopefully resume any normal activity and daily things like dressing,& bathing. cody's family is facing a large financial burden as his insurance is not willing to pay for the care Cody needs. there will be no money for ongoing medical care, or the therapies he will need. the family rents there home and it is not handicapped accessible. with all the added stress due to the uncertainty of their sons future cody's parents are also dealing with the stress of limited finances and a growing mountain of medical costs that will only exceed once the insurance has maxed out. i can only imagine being a parent of three children and being faced with a decision between next months bills to keep a roof over my childrens heads or the continued medical care my oldest son needs to try and have some form of normalcy. we are asking for any donation large or small to help cover the cost of hospital bills, rehab, medical equipment needed, home with the proper accessability for cody to be able to live with his family. and the added expenses of gas and daily living. we appreciate all the support and donations for this family during their troubled time.
