Chauncy FC's BU18, for the past two years, has made a pre-season trip to Virginia to play in the Prince William Soccer Ice Breaker tournament. This tournament provides an opportunity for our boys to be seen by college coaches from all over the country. Last year, we had interest shown in seven players, by coaches from as far away as Colorado. For many, this may be their only hope of getting into college.
In the past, the players have paid a majority of the cost to cover tournament fees, transportation, lodging and meals. This year is different, however. The cost to attend this tournament has risen considerably and the simple fact is that the players alone cannot contribute enough to pay the full cost of the trip.
As a result, we are seeking donations, from a variety of sources, to raise at least $2,500 to help defer some of the cost and help keep player contributions to last year's level. While we hesitate to do this, there really is no other way to get everyone there without some help.
Our boys come from a variety of backgrounds and many live in tough economic conditions. When Chauncy asks them to help and give back to the community, there is never any hesitation. They have participated in collecting money for the Salvation Army, manning kettles in the area; worked with special needs children by donating their time and energy to get them some exercise and inclusion in the sport they love; assisted needy families by moving furniture and appliances; raised money for cancer awareness, and a multitude of other pursuits.
Most of these young men are leaders in their schools, communities and places of worship. A large number are captains of their high school teams. They are the heroes of the younger members of our club and act as mentors to many of them.
If you are so inclined to help, your donation of any amount will be greatly appreciated.
