Sarah's off to Uganda - LaSERIO 2014

I am a leader and District Commissioner
with Girlguiding in Southwark and I have been selected to lead a Girlguiding
London & South East England service project to Uganda in the summer of 2014.
Girlguiding works with girls and young women from all backgrounds across the UK and builds confidence, raises aspirations, uncovers potential and encourages girls to use their voices. I have been a member of the association for 23 years and in this time have seen amazing changes in myself, my peers and the girls I now work with.
When I was a younger member of Girlguiding, I was given the opportunity to travel overseas with my County and my Region. As a result of the experiences I had and the insights I gained, my awareness, aspirations and confidence all grew. I wanted to offer other young girls the same opportunities, and so, along with 3 assistant leaders, I will be leading a trip to Uganda this summer, for 14 girls (aged 14 to 18) from across London and South East England.
The trip will last for three weeks and the majority of the time will be spent working with an organisation called the Quicken Trust in the village of Kabubbu (approximately 20 miles north of Uganda's capital, Kampala). The Quicken Trust aims to transform the lives of people living in poverty in rural Uganda "“ www.quickentrust.com.
The charity, based in Kabubbu, has built a new primary and secondary school, a healthcare centre, many homes and infrastructure, including sourcing clean and safe water. They continue to support these projects, as well as providing foster care, care for the elderly and care for those affected by HIV. On our visit, we will be working in the areas where our time and skills will be most required. The girls will be involved in making this decision and will be given full responsibility to ensure the completion of a mini development project in the village. The founders of the charity are also interested in setting up a Girlguiding unit in the village, which will hopefully allow local girls to uncover their own potential and raise their aspirations.
After a visit to Kabubbu in 2010 Uganda's vice-president, Edward Ssekandi, described the work of the Quicken Trust and its volunteers as "the finest example of rural development I have seen in the country." We are confident that this project will make a difference to the lives of some of the villagers, as well as the girls we are taking, and I am very excited to be getting involved.
This incredible adventure is costing me £3,000, plus expenses for vaccinations and equipment. Anything you are able or willing to give towards this trip would be much appreciated.
