Hi! My name is Danica, I am 7 years old and live in Chippewa Falls, WI. I was in a terrible sledding accident on Sunday, January 12th in Eau Claire, WI. The tube I was riding on slide off the side of the hill into a line of trees. I hit the tree with my head and left arm going about 15 mph and was knocked unconscious. I was transported by ambulance to Luther Hospital in Eau Claire where my diagnosis was as follows:
1. TBI s/p sledding accident
2. Post-concussive syndrome secondary to No. 1
3. Impaired mobility
4. Impaired ADLs and self-care
5. AO of upper cervical spine interspinous ligamentous strain
6. Left mid shaft humerus fracture
7. Left comminuted occipital skull fracture
8. Left transverse temporal bone fracture with extension into the left TMJ and foreman ovale
In simple terms....I had a broken left arm, an injury to my neck and several fractures to my skull.
I was then flown by helicopter to Rochester, MN. Once in Rochester I was in the pediatric ICU for 3 days then moved to the regular pediatric floor for 1 week, now I am on the rehabilitation floor where I am doing physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy for 3 hours per day. I am still having trouble with my balance and walking. I am making progress everyday but it is a lot of work!!!
They anticipate me staying here for another 2 weeks or so. That will make my stay in Rochester at least 1 month long.
This accident will cost my parents a large amount of money, even more then when I was at Children's in St. Paul, MN when I was 6 months old and had a wilms tumor and had to have my left kidney removed. Not only will my parents have medical expenses they also have travel expenses back and forth from Chippewa Falls to Rochester (2 hours each way) as they need to be home for my Sisters, Gabby and Lena too.
Just to give you an example, we already received the bill for the helicopter, and my 25 min ride from Eau Claire to Rochester cost just over $24,400.00. YIKES!
Any donation would be appreciated to help my parents with all the expenses. So many people have helped already and every little bit is appreciated!
