Hello Family & Friends!
As you all know I work as a labor & delivery RN and have been given the amazing opportunity to volunteer and study abroad in Nicaragua. I will be working in a casa materna in a rural village called Jinotepe, outside the capital city of Managua. A casa materna is a place where pregnant mothers are able to come and deliver their babies with the assistance of skilled attendants. Currently only 74% of births have skilled attendants present at delivery. While there, they receive food, shelter, education, transportation and support. Nicaragua is a country riddled with poverty, putting many of these mothers and babies at risk. According to UNICEF, every 38 hours, a pregnant mother dies. The maternal mortality rate is 86.47 per 100,000 births and the infant mortality is 22 per 1,000. Many of these deaths can be prevented if the proper education and supplies are provided. While down there I will be educating and working hands on with the staff and administration. I am thrilled at the prospect of being able to broaden my skills, while at the same time giving back to the women and children of this beautiful country.
Although it is a volunteer trip, it comes at a high cost.It also comes out of my pocket. I am reaching out to all of you to help support me in this endeavor. Any amount is unbelievably helpful. It is also tax deductible. Thank you so much for helping these women, babies and me!!!!
