Make our Historic Bell Ring again

Donation protected
The First Presbyterian Church is a tax exempt religious organization. I am the Clerk of the Session, the governing body of the church. We are raising money to repair the ringing mechanism of the historic bell in the steeple of the Church at 120 East State Street in Trenton, NJ. Our congregation and all of Trenton will benefit by having the sound of our bell be part of the city soundscape as it was for 190 years up to 20 years ago .

The bell was cast in 1807 by George Hedderly, a member of a family of bell founders in England. He emigrated to the US in 1793 and set up a bell foundry in Philadelphia. He died in 1813 and only seven of his bells are known to survive. When the  church was rebuilt in 1840, the bell was moved to its steeple.

We are a small urban congregation. Your donations will offset the $10,000 cost to re-hang the bell and install a modern striker in place of the wheel and rope system that worked the bell originally. Church Specialties, a 95-year old company from Pulteney, Vermont will do the work.

We would like to have our bell-ringing mechansim be repaired and ready to ring again for the next Patriots' Week celebration of the Revlolutionary War battles in Trenton, which will be held in December, 2017.
