My name is Katie and I am writing on behalf of my mom Betsy. This story is not just about my mom but my family as a whole. We are a family though thick and thin and both of my parents have been very sick.
OUR STORY
Three years ago my mom was diagnosed with Primary Immunodeficiency disease and her battle started there. She was always the backbone in our family ensuring that we were always well taken care of. Now she was the one who needed to be cared for. She no longer could work because she was susceptible to getting sick and her body could not fight off infection the same away others can. With the immune deficiency came numerous hospital stays from various infections, pneumonia, kidney failure and liver failure which she fought off each time. By the grace of God somehow survived but her condition grew worse. She gained more health complications over the years. She battles severe arthritis, she has a neck condition that is slowly limiting her ability to walk and various other complications that she suffers with every day. No matter the struggle she fights on.
Then a year ago even though her condition worsened things seemed to start to look like they were slowing down. Then the unthinkable happened and my step dad Ron who was my mom's sole caretaker got diagnosed after 12 years in remission with stage four prostate cancer again. He once again had to fight through an advanced stage of cancer while caring for my mom. I had to go home to help. I am an only child so I had to step up to the plate and the parents that always were my biggest supporters now needed my support.
Both of my parents are fighters but it has been very difficult physically, emotionally and financially. Both Ron and my mom are unable to work based on their health conditions so that left me. I am a preschool teacher and do not make the money unfortunately to financial make up for the income they no longer have.
Currently my mom is back in the hospital in critical condition in the ICU. She barely made it through the past few days fighting off a gastrointestinal bleed, severe infection that caused her to go septic and liver failure again. To say that she is strong in an understatement.
With these illnesses has come lots of heart ache and stress. Financially we have stayed afloat but with my mom and dad’s illnesses we have gained an exorbitant amount of bills to ensure that both her and Ron get the treatment they have needed to live. She will be in the hospital for a long time this time unfortunately. This time she was a lot sicker than ever before. I did not even know that was possible. We need help to make sure we can pay the bills to continue not only her care in the hospital but her care when she can come home. With both of my parents out of work we don't only have medical costs but household costs that we can't afford because of the amount of money that is paid each month for treatments and medication to make the pain that her and Ron live with daily bearable. With my mom, currently in the ICU I also need to take time off to help my family. I work in early childhood education for a great company but taking the time off I need to be with my family during this extremely difficult time will be unpaid. This leaves us with no income and I have no immediate family to help me bear the weight of this burden because both my parents are sick.
I am asking those around me humbly and with the deepest appreciation to help my family during our time of need. We are a proud family and asking for help can be extremely difficult when we all are hardworking driven individuals ourselves. Life has certainly been very hard these past few years but through it all we have had each other. Now I am asking those who know us and are can help to help to ensure that both of my parents have their medical needs met and a suitable home to go back to when my mom can get out of the hospital. We have a long road ahead of us but together we can make it though.
