Emily's T1D Supporters

Emily was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes on January 6th 2014. At only 5 years old, Emily also has Hypothyroidism & Eosinophilic Gastroenteritis. With Diabetes being the newest of the diagnosis, it has become the most dangerous.


Prior to Christmas 2013 Emily kept telling us that she wanted a puppy for Christmas. After telling us this multiple times, we discussed the idea of it, and decided that it would be a good idea to get a family dog for both Emily and her sister; Addison (1 year old). We did our research and for some reason felt a strong need to get a German Shepherd puppy. So, on the morning of December 25th, the girls scrambled into the living room to find a New German Shepherd puppy named Koda (Delivered specially from Santa).

A few weeks after Christmas is when we got the news that Emily had Type 1 diabetes and this is when Kristin and I were introduced to the idea of Diabetic Alert dogs as an additional safety measure for catching low blood sugars while she is asleep at night.

In the short time she has been diagnosed with T1D, she has been through many high and low sugar readings and has to get poked multiple times a day.

After being introduced to the idea of the assistance of a Diabetic Alert Dog (DAD) and also personally seeing them in action, we realized that maybe God had already put this plan in action by already having the dog that is capable of being trained.

The complications that come with low blood sugar can include becoming unconscious, seizure, and death. One in twenty diabetics will die of low blood sugar in their sleep.

After looking up the name "Koda", which means "Friend, who shadows you by constantly being by your side", we knew that this puppy was meant to be with our family for Emily.
