John’s Kidney Transplant!

My dad John Zhawred was diagnosed with a genetic kidney disease called Alport Syndrome in December of 2015. The most common symptoms of this disease is hearing loss and kidney failure. The doctors told my dad he needed to start dialysis in 2016 and would need a kidney transplant. He has been on the transplant waitlist since starting dialysis.

I was tested and found out I was a match soon after he started dialysis. We were so excited, but a week later I received a call saying that since it is a genetic disease I could be a carrier. The transplant team decided it was to risky and would not allow me to be his donor! You can image how devastated we were.

The doctors recently suggested he look into the transplant list in Florida, as the wait time is much shorter than where we live. After hearing back from Tampa General, they will only move forward putting him on the list if he can show that he has enough to cover travel and living expenses as he will have to stay in Florida post surgery 4-6 weeks.

My dad is a hard working man who has always done his best to take care of his family. He is a loving husband to my mom and is especially proud of his three grandchildren.
