NYC Half-Marathon and Local SPCA

Hello Everybody! The people that know me know that I wouldn't normally try a fundraiser for myself. I do my best and do what I can for myself and my family. I am a high school English teacher at my alma mater, and a Crew Member at Trader Joe's. I work two jobs because I love it and it helps to pay the bills that being a teacher cannot pay alone. Sometimes I am stressed, but that is when I try to run.

I became a runner in 2011 as a New Year's resolution. I ran my first 5k in March and became addicted. I ran at least 1 race each month from March until November of that year. In November, I stepped up my game and ran my first Half-Marathon. In total, I've run 15 5k races, 2 obstacle courses, and 5 Half-Marathons. The problem is that I've fallen out of my training while working two jobs. It's time to get back into running full-time.

In October, I ran the Baltimore Running Festival Relay Marathon with three lovely ladies and it got me wanting to run my next Half. I signed up for a race that has been my interest since before I was a runner, but the race is very selective: the New York City Half-Marathon resorts to a lottery system and I haven't been picked in the two years that I've applied. This year, I received notification in December that I once again had not been selected.

I had moved on and started looking at new races, forgetting my dream of running the NYC Half, when I received another email from the NYRR stating that they had changed the course and would be allowing more runners into the field. On Friday, January 17, 2014, I received an email stating that I had been selected to run in the race.

Now comes my dilemma: I have a race coming up and I haven't saved enough money to do it. I've never been to NYC but I know that I will need money for transportation, lodging, food, and other expenses that come with running the race. I would also like to raise money for a good cause.

Here is my proposal. Donate money to send me to NYC and I will then donate all remaining proceeds to the SPCA of Anne Arundel County, our local animal shelter. This is a place that is special to my wife and I because this is where we were able to adopt our dogs, Zoi and Brutus.
