Help Feed the Hungry of Storm-Ravaged Riviera Maya

Donation protected
The holidays are here and we need your help to feed storm ravaged and covid-19 affected people in Riviera Maya

Tropical storms Gamma and Eta, along with hurricanes Delta and Zeta have combined with the coronavirus to create desperate and difficult times for families in Riviera Maya, Mexico.

Not only have the people we help been affected by these trying circumstances, but our fundraising efforts have also been negatively affected at a time when the needs of those we serve are so much greater.

My name is Todd Essick and for the past six months, I have been working with Fathers Hubert Reiner and Patrick Butler preparing and delivering food packages and cooking and serving meals at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. In these six short months, we have managed to double the number of meals and food packages we are able to provide to the families of Riviera Maya.  We have done this through the support of individuals for our GoFundMe efforts.

In the face of unprecedented events and untold suffering, we have endeavored to feed the hungry.  Whether a hot bowl of chili macaroni or a food package with essentials to cook at home, we have been providing what we can, when we can, to those most in need. The need is now most dire in an area known as in Las Torres (The Towers).  This is a community constructed beneath the power-lines and towers west of Playa Del Carmen.  Despite our efforts, the children and the families of this impoverished area need more than what we are currently able to provide.

In an effort to lend our support to this community, we recently established a partnership in Las Torres with Martha “Honorina” Herrera Cepina.

We met Honorina through the Rotary Seaside in Playa Del Carmen where we learned that under her leadership, a one-room wooden schoolhouse was transformed into concrete multi-room school that also serves as a community center. We also learned that the Rotary supports a food program that provides breakfast and lunch for school children. As Honorina explained to me and to Father Hubert, these free meals were often the only meals these children received in their entire day.

Honorina also shared her philosophy predicated upon individuals working to earn the charity they receive.  For instance, those in need might earn Honorina’s assistance by teaching, serving, cleaning or even filling pot-holes on the road in front of the school. She stressed the pride that individuals feel when they have done honest work in exchange for the assistance she is happy to provide.

Honorina’s inspiring example prompted our current partnership and our goal to provide additional aid to the families of the Las Torres area—a community at the edge of Playa del Carmen, at the edge of the jungle, and at the edge of food insecurity and hunger.  Please help us pull them back from the edge.

Thank you for supporting our food programs.
