UNLOCK BENNY

Donation protected
I am passionate about my grandchildren, especially Benny, who has Autism Spectrum Disorder. This is just one of the many challenges Benny has had to face in his short, little life of 6 years. Benny has endured surgery at 5 days old so he could breathe on his own, feeding tubes until he was 4, asthma, seizures, and more. Despite all of these challenges, Benny is a sweet, social, lovable little boy with a great sense of humor. He has a special ability to charm everyone that meets him.

Because he is locked in a body that can't function in the same way a neuro-typical child does, every day challenges Benny and his family. Just recently Benny was sick with the flu. Because Benny can't communicate verbally, we could only guess how he felt. He was unable to tell us whether his throat was sore, his tummy hurt, or he had a headache. He has not learned to sign, some children don't. He makes his needs and wants known by pointing, grunting, sometimes hitting and throwing when the frustration to communicate gets too great.

The most frustrating thing for us is that we know there is a key that could unlock Benny's potential. There are therapies that would help Benny with his communication and functional skills, but neither of his parents have a health insurance policy that covers the intensive therapy he so desperately needs. With ABA therapy, the most proven, effective form of therapy for kids with ASD, many children progress so well that they are able to function in mainstream classrooms at their appropriate age level. Some children that have been non-verbal begin to talk, some to use adaptive technology.

Benny is in kindergarten for special needs children at the public school. He receives very little therapy there and has delays in many areas. The small amount of therapy he has received so far with his current medical coverage just isn't enough to change the quality of his life.

We are buying a medical policy just for Benny that covers the 10-20 hours of weekly ABA therapy that he needs. It is extremely important that Benny receive this therapy while he is still young. It will give him the best chance to progress with learning new skills and behaviors, improving those he has, learning to communicate verbally, and teaching his family the necessary skills to continue his progress.

The out-of-pocket cost to pay the insurance policy premium, deductible and co-pays can reach $10,000 a year. Both his parents work full time, but the crippling costs of his care to date make this a dream without your help. We are asking everyone to help fund this therapy to give Benny a chance to escape a part of the prison his disability has locked him in.

Any donation will be so gratefully appreciated. Please pass this on to anyone who might be interested in knowing Benny's story and would help him.
Please help us give Benny a chance.
