Help Kelly Heal

Kelly Layne could really use our support right now.

Dear Friends and Family, this may come as a surprise, as she hasn’t been public about it, but our dear friend Kelly Layne is having some intense health challenges. It’s not easy to accept help, but Kelly’s at the point where the dire straits have overcome the reticence to “not impose on others”, or “not feeling like it’s life or death”, or “others are more deserving”, or whatever. Essentially, she’s held out for as long as she can, but is ready to ask and accept our assistance now, so let’s flood her with some LOVE!

Kelly has always been there for so many of us and for her larger community, both personally and professionally. Let’s be sure to support her, as she has always been such rock solid support when so many needed her.

What is the illness?

Kelly’s days currently include some or all of these symptoms:  not fully functioning thyroid including, struggling with debilitating exhaustion, adrenal fatigue, hormonal imbalances, poor gut health (digestion issues and stomach pain), acid reflux, bowel issues, bacterial infections in her intestines, bloating, current weight loss, brain fog, memory loss, off and on viruses due to weak immune system, hair loss, throat/gland issues, muscle ache, swollen tongue, sore gums and teeth. Her most recent issue is decreased lung capacity and associated difficulty breathing.

The diagnosis looks like Hashimoto’s Autoimmune disease, with additional complications like 2 recent bouts of mononucleosis. Kelly has had low-lying symptoms for years, including Epstein Barr Virus. The 3 necessary components to Hashimoto's are impermeable gut, autoimmune disorder in the genes and a trigger. It seems exhaustion from doing too much plus a bout of mono this past spring may have launched Hashimoto's into full effect.

Kelly is now in a dangerous spiral where she cannot afford the treatment she needs, leaving her too weak to earn enough to stay afloat, causing additional stress, and has her heading toward not being able to afford a place to live, let alone meaningful treatment.

What's the plan?

Through friends who work in the wellness sector, Kelly has been introduced to a naturopathic doctor who has helped people she knows personally to live a healthy life despite having Hashimoto's. Based on her friends’ first hand accounts, as well as other referrals and reviews, she seems to be Kelly’s best shot for living comfortably with this autoimmune condition.

Kelly has spoken to this doctor, and has a good understanding of the course of treatment, which will require regular follow-up visits to monitor and adjust treatment is needed, following the initial consultation. Kelly is extremely confident that under her care, she can get back on her physical and financial feet. Unfortunately, she does not accept insurance.

In addition to charges from her new doctor, there will be substantial fees to cover lab tests, recommended medications and herbs, and Kelly will also be receiving treatment from a therapist to support her emotionally through this extremely intense chapter of her life.

This is Urgent!

Kelly is in need of funds immediately to cover past medical bills, and to allow her to commence treatment with local specialists who can guide her back to health. She has depleted her savings paying for medical bills to this point, and was unable to work for more than one client much of this calendar year because of her poor health.  She has no paid work lined up past November, as it has become increasingly difficult for her to seek out new work opportunities given the state of her health. As a freelance contractor, Kelly doesn't get any paid sick leave or time off.

Unfortunately, given the realities of the health insurance market in the U.S., Kelly’s basic insurance plan has covered essentially no costs to date. Most of her anticipated medical costs for the near future will all be 100% out of pocket. The sooner Kelly receives financial support, the sooner treatment can begin, allowing her to regain her energy and flourish once again. The psychological and emotional burden that these looming costs hold have been a source of anxiety for Kelly, which has only made it even more difficult for healing to happen.

Here’s Kelly, in her own words:

"My health is not improving; it seems I recently had a relapse. If I continue to decline, I could have irreparable damage to my thyroid/other organs and develop other autoimmune conditions. And I am running out of $, as I’m not able to work enough to support myself. I am struggling to pay my bills and cover my expenses. I don't know how I'm going to pay rent coming up. My car is in bad shape and I also need to deal with that.  I have to get better so I can take charge of my life and take care of myself. But I need funds to access the healthcare and treatment I need as soon as possible.

As for my emotional state, it depends on the day! In general, I am keeping a positive attitude, but cannot control my emotions at all times, due to hormonal imbalances. I can get emotional beyond my control, so I have to work to remain calm and not become overwhelmed and depressed. When I am overwhelmed, it’s hard to pull out of it and rise above to move forward. And it’s hard not to be consumed by it all the time, as it dominates my body and mind, so I am looking to bring more joy and laughter into my days.

When I am depressed, it feels like I am stuck in a vortex and may not break free, although I know I can get through this and come out on the other side.

Other than money, I can be supported in many capacities, as I’m short on energy as much as funds. This could include home-cooked vegetables/foods that fit within my strict elimination diet, hair cuts, body work, healing sessions of all sorts and joyful outings. I am grateful for thoughts, prayers, phone calls...everything helps and is held with such gratitude....thank you!"

If you know Kelly, you know she has been a tireless advocate for so many. She has given so much of herself to the Venice Chamber of Commerce, made so many Joyful Activist actions possible, and has assisted too many non-profits to mention. Let’s return that love to her, so she can thrive once again, and be the vibrant force she knows she can be.

It's not easy for anyone to ask for help. Now that Kelly is open to receiving, let's all do whatever we can to assist her.
