As many of you know, Ed and Maria Brickley's youngest son Patrick recently spent 25 days, including Christmas Day, at Riley Children's Hospital for his  reacurring Hemi Pleagic Migraines, which put Patrick in a coma for several days. It had been a year and three months since Patrick's last episode and Ed & Maria were looking forward to slowly taking Patrick off his migraine medications due to his steady progress. But with no warning signs, on the early morning hours of December 2nd, Patrick had another migraine, and would later also be diagnosed with encephalitis (a viral infection of the cerebral fluid) causing yet again another lengthy and expensice hospital stay.

Saturday December 2 around 2:00am.
Ed got a call from one of Patrick's friends, saying Patrick wasn't acting right and could possibly be having another migraine episode. Ed raced to get him, rushed him home, put him to bed, and started monitoring his progress just as doctors had instructed him to do. Typically these episodes last for 8-10 hours with Patrick, but after 24 hours of Patrick not responding and losing fluids, Ed and Maria decided it was time to take Patrick to Riley Children's Hospital.

Not knowing what to expect and praying for the best, several days would pass before Patrick would show any signs of progress. Ed and Maria stayed positive throughout this whole process, because they knew  Patrick was resilant and would fight just like he did 15 months ago. The hours passed and turned to days, day after day, night after night, sitting by Patrick's bedside. Ed and Maria spent all 25 nights at the hospital, taking turns on who got to sleep on the rollaway bed and not the recliner.

Patrick worked hard and slowly started making progress after 3 weeks of daily physical therapy, eating ice chips for a few days, feeding tubes for weeks, and speech therapy's. Patrick stayed positive and kept fighting, even if it meant spending Christmas in a hospital room, not being able to enjoy the holidays like everyone else.

December 27th
Two days after Christmas, Ed and Maria were finally able to take Patrick home to finsih out his recovery. He is attending school, driving his truck (when Ed can be in the passenger seat), hanging out with friends, going to high school basketball games, and getting ready to finish his final semester of his senior year.

Friends helping friends
If any of you know the Brickley family, you know that they are one of the most humble and kind families in the Center Grove Community. But 25 days in Riley Hospital can take a toll physically, emotionally, and financially on a family. Ed and Maria began receiving the medical bills several days before they even left Riley Children's Hospital. As a gesture to Ed and the rest of his family, I would like to raise some money for them to help ease the financial burden and potentially take a few hospital bills off their plate. Ed and Maria know nothing about this and wouldn't have asked for help even if they needed it. Let's take 5 minutes out of our day and a few bucks out of our pockets and help this great family out. $5, $10, $20, $50, $100, anything helps. I know they would greatly appreciate it.

Sincerely, Your friends
