Poor little Josephina has already been through more than any of us should ever have to endure. We want to give her the best life possible and she deserves no less. She's a water baby just like Lexy and I (who would've guessed she would have webbed feet, being born in the desert!) and loves surfing with us both.
We found her scavenging around a gas station outside of Guerrero Negro in the Mexican desert. She had been there by herself since birth and when Lexy picked her up she was tiny and so malnutritioned we didn't think she had much hope. She had the beginning of some sort of skin disease with scabs and hair loss all over.
After several early vet visits (mostly in Spanish which was fun!) we found that she had been supressing her starving hunger pains by eating plastic rubbish and anything else she could eat to stop the constant pain. It took ages for that stuff to work it's way through her little body and as such her belly remained gigantic for a month or so. Initially it was so big that if she lay on her back, she struggled to make herself upright so swollen her poor not-so-little stomach was.
We originally had planned on nursing her till we could find a loving home for her, but as we saw her improve day by day, we fell in love so quickly and as such our trip around the world has evolved miles in turn. Before we knew it the little black pup had a huge place in our hearts and a seat at the dinner table in our family forever.
After seeing over 15 veterinarians (most hopeless with domestic pets) across Mexico and more through Central America and South Am, we have finally nursed her back to what would be considered "full health". Her bones never got the proper nutrients from her mother and as such she had rickets at well as a limp that she has only recently gotten rid of. It's an odd and cruel thing to have a 5 month old puppy on the arthritis treatments intended for 14 year old dogs.

Since rescuing Josephina, Lexy and I have saved 5 other puppies that have been dumped on the highway. We've found homes or shelters for them all, as difficult as it has been sometimes! The people in much of Latin America don't have enough food for themselves let alone another mouth to feed.
So friends, now the time has come to start seriously looking at the long, expensive and arduous process to get our little girl home.
We are hoping to make it down to Chile sometime soon and will begin getting Josie ready for her long journey home. Australia has been fantastic in recently changing their strict quarantine laws and now it is easier, although still very costly and time consuming (we have to live in Chile with her for 7 months as a part of the process).
So with your help we would love to be able to afford to bring our little girl safely back home to live with us in Australia. Anything you can spare will be so greatly appreciated and we will continue to update you all on our Josephina's much anticipated progress. The money will go towards the 7 months of vet bills, blood work and vaccinations, flight costs home, quarantine costs in both countries and the 10 day minimum quarantine stay in Sydney (just that alone is over $1,000). So once again any help you can offer would be much appreciated, even if it's just to check on how Josie's going on the blog and sending her your well wishes!
