I'm reaching out to all of our family and friends to ask for help. In November, 2013 my father Michael Hout was diagnosed with lung cancer. But it's a little more complicated than that. My father's case is very rare and complicated. He has two different types of lung cancer, one type in each lung. This is very rarely seen. In the left lung is a non-small cell carcinoma and in the right is the most aggressive form of lung cancer there is; small cell carcinoma. He has had two surgeries removing large portions of his lungs and he will need to start chemo and radiation in the next 6 weeks. These treatments will give him a 25% chance of cure.
He has been out of work for 4 weeks from his first surgery, and will need another 4 weeks to recover from the surgery on January 6th. Then he will be out again to complete 4-6 cycles of chemo and radiation over 3-4 months.
The medical bills have already started to pile up and will continue to do so. My father's income is the only one that pays the bills in a home with 5 people (my mother was laid off and has been unable to find work). As many of you know, New York State disability is very little, and will not pay the medical bills and help support the household in the amount of time he will be required to be out of work.
