I will be attending YWAM's creative discipleship training school in Alesund, Norway this fall. Discipleship Training School is a prerequisite for becoming a YWAM staffperson, but the overarching purpose is to provide cross-cultural experiences for individuals leading to a more intimate relationship with God, a better understanding of the world and their purpose in it, and an opportunity to explore and discover God-given passions. Why Norway? Though I've heard about the raw, natural beauty of its coastline and fjords, the people's love of the outdoors and extreme sports, and an endless supply of pickled herring and smoked salmon, I was drawn to Norway for another reason. The YWAM staff in Alesund run a creative discipleship program where students may choose from several creative tracks; I have chosen the fine art track in order to focus on painting. During the program I will be encouraged to listen to the Lord's voice in creating, and to further develop my artistic abilities. I hope to learn more about who God is, who I am in light of Him.

If you feel led to do so, I ask for your support in prayer, finances, or both as I embark on this adventure. I am requesting financial support to help cover the cost of the school, my living expenses, and for travel for the outreach portion of the school. The cost for the school year is 50,000 NOK (Norweigan Krones), which is approximately 8,000 USD. I will travel with my classmates to one of several countries across the globe during March and April 2015 for outreach missions. I don't know where we will travel, but this year the school will journey to Mexico, central China, and to the Philippines where, among other things, they will help with relief work in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan, which many of you know, devastated the southern islands of the Philippines while I was traveling there with Engineers Without Borders in 2013.

During my stay in Norway, I will have time to create artwork, and would like to offer to share reproductions of my work with those who support me. Please share your mailing address with me, and I will send you postcards of my artwork based on the levels of support shown below. If you'd like to see some of my previous works, please visit my online portfolio here:

The school begins in September 2014 and runs until May 2015. I'll have the opportunity to participate in outreach throughout Norway as well as in other countries throughout the world. "The vocation of the artist is to speak of the present as beautiful in itself but as pointing beyond itself, to enable us to see both the glory that already fills the earth and the glory that shall flood it to overflowing...The artist is thus to be like the Israelite spies in the desert, bringing back fruit from the promised land to be tasted in advance...But just as not all the spies brought back an encouraging report, so many artists recoil from the challenging vision of the future and prefer to give the apparently more 'relevant' message of despair. Here is the challenge, I believe, for the Christian artist, in whatever sphere: to tell the story of the new world so that people can taste it, want it, even while acknowledging the reality of the desert in which we presently live."
