Lending a hand to a family in crisis...

Max Hinojosa was born on November 5, 2013 into a loving family, the first child of Cristian and Sara Hinojosa. Within two weeks of birth, Max was admitted back into the hospital, with alarming blood levels that would require extensive testing, medical procedures, transfusions, and an endless number of needles and IVs. After a month of heart wrenching tests, surgeries, and endless days and nights of waiting, Max was diagnosed with JMML, an extremely rare form of infant leukemia that affects less than one child per million. Max's blood levels remain critical, and his spleen is twice the size it should be. He is not old enough to begin treatment, which may include a stem cell bone marrow transplant. This procedure will require chemotherapy to knock out his existing blood components, and then begin anew with the transplanted cells. It will almost certainly require a 3-12 month hospitalization for Max, and necessitate having at least one parent with him at all times. The thought of this course of action is extremely difficult for the family to accept but possibly the only option.

Cristian and Sara both provide for their family as firefighter and graphic designer. Sara is currently on unpaid leave from her company. Cristian continues to work his firefighter shifts every 3 days, but finds it increasingly necessary to be with Sara and Max for the numerous oncologist and hospital visits required each week. There may come a time when he is unable to work regularly as well and his sick hours continue to rapidly dwindle. In an effort to keep the Hinojosa family from incurring debt or enduring unreasonable financial hardship during this difficult time in their lives, this page was created as a means for those who have a desire to help out. The generosity of friends in a time of need is what many of us rely on. Please take an opportunity to lend a hand if you can as this family endures the most difficult challenge they have ever faced. If you can't help in a material way, the family appreciates and needs your prayers constantly. Thank you in advance for your help.
