Boost the Brown's

The good Rev. Jimmy Gallant approached us last Thursday after being contacted by the Sheriff's department concerning the family of Akilah Brown. Rev. Gallant is a familiar face around the Lowcountry who is known for his work helping those who are less fortunate or in need. The Brown's are a family who came to Charleston, SC seeking refuge from an abusive living situation in Philadelphia. The mother, Akilah Brown, is now the sole provider for her grandmother and her three children: Lawrence (15), Quasim (9), and her daughter Mikhayla (8). The family left their previous life and abusive father in Philadelphia and boarded a train with nothing but one suitcase each. They came to Charleston to stay with one of Akilah's cousin's who ended up kicking them out before she had adequate time to find employment or a home. They were picked up off the street last week by the Sheriff's department when it was 19 degrees outside. After spending several nights at the Charleston County detention center with Chaplain Smith and Maj. Keyes we had finally raised enough money to get the Brown's a temporary hotel room and some food. The Brown's benefactors can not continue to pay for this hotel room and all of the homeless shelters in the area are full. We are working around the clock with Akilah to find her family a home and to find her employment. Akilah is a sharp, well-spoken woman who is dedicated to providing the best possible life for her young children and her grandmother. All donated funds will be distributed through Gallant Evangelical Ministries to cover the first two months of rent, food, and basic needs (i.e. school supplies, clothes, public transit, etc...). Any extra funds that are collected will be used to help other children and people in need in the Tri-county area. This is a special family that values each other dearly due to the circumstances they've had to overcome. Akilah and her family are determined to create a bright future for themselves and with a solid platform to build off of I believe that the sky is the limit.
