CONTACT Disability Resource Center

Dear Friend of CONTACT:

I am writing to inform you of the life changing events taking place here at CONTACT and to ask for your continued support of our mission.

CONTACT has expanded its mission by becoming a consumer controlled "one-stop-shop" for people with disabilities. What does this mean? While we are still serving the community with our reassurance call line, we have decided to go a few steps further and help build a well-organized and self-sustained community for individuals with disabilities. This means that we help people re-gain access to the community on a holistic level. We promote independent living and urge consumers to become a contributing member of the community.

By partnering with other non-profit organizations, we are able to ensure that we are offering the maximum amount of resources to the community. Our partners, which are housed inside the CONTACT Center, include: The National Federation of the Blind, ARC of Greater Columbus (developmental disability resource center) , NAMI (National Alliance of Mental Illness) "“ Columbus Chapter, The Autism Hope Center, and SNAP (Special Needs Ability Program). We have also partnered with other community organizations like Country's Barbecue, Goodwill, and Fort Benning's Exceptional Family Member Program. So what do these partnerships mean to the community? When individuals come to the CONTACT Center for help, we will do everything in our power to make sure that they receive the help needed. If we do not have the resources to offer immediate assistance, we will find them and have them for you as soon as possible.

One example of this assistance involves the Coulton family. Antonio was one of only a hand full of people to contract H1N1 in the area. After spending several months in an area hospital, he was transferred to a nursing home to receive in-patient therapy. After nearly two years, he was making no progress. His family contacted us and explained the situation. Antonio just wanted to live at home again, work, and be a productive member of society; like he had always done in the past. Volunteers at CONTACT discovered that even though his insurance was being charged for many forms of therapy, he was receiving none. CONTACT volunteers pitched in to modify his home for his return and we arranged in home rehab to take place. Upon completing the rehab, he began an extensive out-patient routine at a local rehabilitation center. Antonio went from not walking or living independently, to walking and once again maintaining a full-time job.

We are currently offering free classes in American Sign Language, Braille, and disability etiquette. Whether serving as a patient advocate or educating the community, CONTACT will be there to serve. Please come see what we are all about.

As CONTACT's mission changes our operational expenses have changed as well. While the bills continue to poor in, we have remembered to keep the community first. In order to continue our mission of serving people with disabilities in the Chattahoochee Vally, we are asking for your financial support. With your help, we can help to positively change lives. With your help, we can help keep this community strong and ensure that everyone has a role in its success.

If you have any question, please call me at 706-322-2202 or our treasurer, Carolyn Storey at 706-569-7527.
Thank you again for your support. We believe there are great things ahead for CONTACT and hope you will be a part of them.

Very truly yours,

Wesley Jay O'Neal "“ Executive Director
