65k's of Pain for PNG Gain
Donation protected
(The photo above is of an 'almost' completed chicken coop that will house 50 chicks for 6 weeks, before being distrubuted amongst the villagers, in order to create sustainable food and income source for Aitape.)
In 2015 Tanya and Peter created a charity event called "65Ks of pain for PNG gain". This was after being disheartened in the previous year where the pair had raised funds for a high profile charity helping women and children affected by domestic violence in PNG, that distributed only 20% of the funds raised to the actual cause and the remaining 80% was absorbed by administration fees.
The 2015 walk went off well, the pair didn't reach their goal of $5000, however with the $2380 they did raise, they were able to build a chicken coop, housing 50 chicks and pay the wages of 4 workers that helped build and raise the chicks. After 6 weeks of raising the chicks, they were distributed amongst the villagers.
Unfortunately the project of building and housing the chicks cost most than the pair had raised, so they were unable to continue supplying the town with more chicks and eventually had to pay workers out of thier own pockets to see out the 6 weeks.
On the 15th October a group of devoted walkers will set out to accomplish this challenging feat. We’ll raise funds asking people to donate whatever they can afford, no amount is too little. We are asking if any of you would like to take on the challenge to join us. In December, volunteers will return to Aitape to help the people continue this work, using the funds to continue raising and distributing chicks to the community. There are approximately 7 villages in the Aitape area and our ultimate goal is to introduce a coupe into each of these villages. Each village’s coop will cost approximately $1,000 to get up and running.
In time we are planning on creating a registered Australian charity to help this community achieve bigger goals, such as setting up hospital transport for pregnant woman, children and the elderly. Who don't have access to medical treatment due to the 10's of kilometers they'd have to travel by foot in searing heat to reach medical help.
Right now, we are asking that you guys help us, roll up your sleeves, chuck on your sneakers and get your walk on. Please, join the team and raise funds.... Alternatively if you can't make the walk a few bucks of encouragement would be super appreciated!
Also anyone interested in doing work with us in Aitape is more than welcome to come along to PNG in December 2016.
