Super Hero Honeymoon! :)

Deadline to make the magic happen: April First, 2014

I want to give my wife the honeymoon of her dreams and I'm asking for your help!

A long time ago, in a land far, far away, I met a girl. I could spend hours extolling the virtues of this girl. How beautiful she was, how clever and creative. How much she made me laugh. There are an infinite number of reasons why I fell head over heels stupid in love with this adorable, apple-cheeked girl from New York, and many of them are difficult to understand unless you're me. Just know that thirteen years ago, I met a girl and it changed my life. She's the best thing that ever happened to me and I'm grateful every day I wake up next to her that she chose to embark on this crazy adventure called life with me at her side.

Thirteen years ago, marriage equality didn't exist. Even seven years ago, when we decided to make our love good and legal, we were limited to a domestic partnership. Most state governments refused to recognize that I wanted this incredible girl beside me for the rest of my life. For seven long years, we were married but we weren't. It was complicated, frustrating, like an integral part of our lives was stuck in stasis.

In 2012, all that changed for the better and on a brisk November evening in 2013, on a beach in Maine at sunset with an audience of two, we finally got married, and that wonderful girl became my wife.

In addition to sharing our lives together, we also own an art-based business, NekojinDesigns.com. We love what we do. Since 2007, we've been traveling the country spreading a queer-positive message through our adorable and diverse designs. We manufacture everything we sell between the two of us; the last seven years have been a series of long hours, longer road trips, and bittersweet triumphs.

We may travel the country, but we rarely get the opportunity to see sights beyond our hotel room window and the convention center where we sell our merchandise. Even then, we don't have the chance to attend any of the events being held as the business comes first. In all that time, we've barely gotten a day off, let alone anything anyone would ever consider a vacation. This honeymoon would be the first real off time we've had in over seven years.

I want to take my new wife to Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle, Washington. It's not much of a secret that we're both huge comic geeks. This trip would be an opportunity for us to attend a convention strictly in an entertainment capacity, to commemorate our marriage with commissions by some of our favorite comic artists, and to finally get some much needed time away from work.

I can't do it without your help. It's not an exaggeration to say that every dollar we make through our business goes back into the business, to keep our products new and fresh, to keep us traveling to conventions so that we can bring our cherished customers the things they love. We don't have disposable income enough to fund our own honeymoon; we didn't have the money to fund more than a very basic wedding ceremony.

$5200 is our goal and will cover a week's worth of expenses in Seattle. It encompasses the $1500 for our hotel, $800 for two roundtrip plane tickets across the country, $300 for the rental car and gas, $150 for two three day passes to ECCC, an $800 food budget, and miscellaneous spending cash that will allow us to travel to the sights in and around Seattle, money for commissions from our favorite comic artists, and the ability to enjoy all that the Pacific Northwest has to offer.

Seattle, land of coffee, former home of the Emerald Archer, and the largest city in Washington, a state that embraces marriage equality, is the perfect place to celebrate our union. At almost 3200 miles away, it's a long way from our home state of Maine. The United Kingdom is closer. Seriously. I checked. ;)

I want to make this occasion special for the wonderful woman who's put up with me for the past thirteen years. I can't thank you enough for helping me make this dream a reality.

Sincerely, with eternal gratitude,
- Kit Bishop

* Thank you packages (except postcards, of course!) will be mailed out around the third week in April, after we've gotten back from our trip.  :)
