"I found a buried treasure on Kauai but it belongs to all of us. Hidden inside the wall of a hotel renovation is an 11foot round stained glass. It is the only documented glass art by Herb Kane, the artist and engineer largely responsible for the Renaissance of the Hawaiian culture. He was actually designated as a National Treasure. Google him please. In addition to his vast body of cultural paintings, he designed the Hokulea catamaran, that to this day sails around the world on a mission of cultural exchange. The huge stained glass accurately depicts the Hokulea, which was designed the same year. This unique art work is itself a National Treasure, and....MAY SOON BE DESTROYED. For three years I've documented the rapid deterioration of the iron structural elements that support the glass and are exposed to the salt air. It has taken that time to get the hotel owners to donate the piece to the museum, the museum to accept it and the County to agree to pay for the glass removal and conservation work. Hurricanes and Flooding... Then, three hurricanes happened; bridges were washed out, people lost their homes, a river changed it's course and months later, parts of the island are still inaccessible while they rebuild. It is not surprising that many material costs on the island have spiked 60%. County funding has now gone to flood relief efforts and rebuilding infrastructure instead of rescuing lost art. In the meantime, the stained glass is leaking badly while the irreplaceable glass material itself, so far, is in perfect condition. Now a new hotel renovation project is about to begin and they want the glass removed within the next six weeks or they will have their construction crew attempt to remove it. I am on my way there to partner with a stained glass company owner, whom I've been collaborating with since the discovery, to strategize first the removal, then the preservation process.
Combined we have over 30 years experience in the reconstruction, repair and preservation of stained glass. We are committed to securing the asset to a safe location where we can begin the restoration and reframing for display in the museum, BUT... without some funding, even the first step will not be possible. THE BEGINNING:three years ago I was looking through old books in a used bookstore on Kauai. A card with a round 3” color image fell out at my feet. I immediately recognized the art to be of a culturally significant large stained glass piece. My wife and I searched for over a year to research and find if it still existed. The original card chose me. Now we are choosing to save the artifact. Join us please.
FUNDING REQUESTS...The costs, as established while working with the County, are in two phases.
PHASE 1- Removal, crating and preliminary analysis of required materials. This phase includes tenting, scaffolding and patching the exterior hotel wall. $7,000 - THIS MUST BE DONE IMMEDIATELY in a dedicated, secure work space above the tsunami evacuation zone.
PHASE 2- All stained glass structural bracing must be replaced, weakened areas of leading rebuilt, then layers of well intended caulk and silicone removed. $63,000 - This will take 3-6 months (as funds are available) to complete before a new wooden frame is build for the final installation in the museum.
