Make a Difference

About this cause:
I reconnected with my father Antonio Vera after more than 25 years during a recent trip to Ecuador. During this trip I met Antonio’s wife and children. I am currently creating a relationship with my father and his family.
In 2014, I would like to make a difference by helping improve the health and well-being of my father. I am raising money to make his  colostomy reversal surgery a reality.

The History:
Antonio is 58 years old, a loving husband and father of six. He has strong family values and is passionate about helping other people. He lives in Ecuador and dedicates his life to making a positive impact in peoples lives by being an active member of human rights groups in Ecuador (Comision Ecumenica de Derechos Humanos (CEDHU) and Grupo Especial de Ayuda Humanitaria).

Over three years ago, Antonio had a surgery to remove a large tumor from his intestines. At that time, doctors recommended he allowed time to heal and recover before performing a colostomy reversal surgery. Life events, lack of health insurance and economic situations have prevented the surgery from taking place. For over three years Antonio has been living with a colostomy bag. The colostomy bag extends several inches out. It is part of his large intestine and literally extends outside of his body. Living with a colostomy bag impacts a person’s life and in some cases, skin irritation or infection may result from leaks.
