We struggled with this idea for a long time, thinking that this would appear selfish and embarrassing to ask for help, but it has become a lot and we needed to reach out for help.
Brandon and I met in a somewhat unlikely circumstance, I was managing a retail store when the back doorbell rang. I opened the door and out of the truck came a new delivery driver, it was Brandon. We hit it off instantly and we would both soon find out that it was the beginning of the rest of your lives. Fast forward three years, we are married, bought a house and have three bulldogs we lovingly refer to as “The Meatballs”. All would seem to be in place, but there is something missing.
We have been trying to get pregnant for a couple years now without success. We started naturally, temping and trying to time it out ourselves. Then came the clomid, we did three cycles, increasing to dose each time, it had very little effect. The doctor canceled the fourth round and we all decided it was time to see a specialist.
Before we go any further, I guess I should say that at 15 years old I was diagnosed with stage 4 Wilm’s tumor. I had one of my kidneys removed and underwent intense chemo and radiation treatment to stop the cancer from spreading. At that age and stage of cancer there was no time or thought of collecting eggs or anything other than what was needed in that moment.
Now at the specialist , blood tests and ultrasounds are done and we wait. Hoping for the best and expecting the worst we got the call with the results. The ultrasound showed a mass taking up the entire inside of my uterus which I’ve since had removed and my hormone levels were off the charts. The doctor concluded that due to my cancer treatments, I was in premature ovarian failure. Her recommendation was that we try IVF with donor eggs.
So here we are, with the cost of a single IVF cycle ranging from $12,000-$26,000 we had no choice but to reach out to family, friends, our community, and anyone who feels touched by our story. We know that everyone has their own financial burdens and not everyone will be able to donate, but the kind words passed along and sharing our page to help us spread our story is appreciated more that anyone can know.
