David's Journey

Donation protected
Hello neighbors!

Most of you have probably seen but not formally met David. He stands at the Chevron on Westcott and I-10 nearly every day. David moved to Houston 3 years ago and was never able to find work, so he ended up on the streets. He would LOVE to work, but is now caught in the terrible cycle of homelessness. He can’t afford housing, but can’t get a job to pay for housing because he doesn’t have a permanent address. David isn’t on the streets with children, mentally ill, or drug addicted, so he is pushed to the bottom of the housing list because he is low on the Vulnerability Index.

I am posting about him here because I believe that someone within this reach has the ability to take a chance and give him a job. David is compiling his work history so that we can create a formal resumé for him, but he has to research all his previous employers the old fashioned way (at the library going through old Kansas City phone books) so this may take a little more time than we are used to these days. In the meantime, I wanted to tell you what I know about him so that you can be considering if you can help.

David’s work experience is in the hotel industry, mainly with banquet setup – he did this for 15 years in Kansas City. I also know that he is reliable and shows up for work rain or shine, standing in freezing rain (with pneumonia) as well as 100°+ temperatures for hours on end, and even in the worst conditions he is personable and kind-hearted. Last, but maybe most importantly, HE WANTS TO WORK! David never wanted to be homeless asking for help every day and, more than anything, he wants to EARN a living! He just needs someone to take a chance on him. Is that you?

Please send me a private message if you would like to know how to get in touch with David to consider him for a position in a stable work environment.

Homelessness is a complex issue, and very difficult to get out of once caught in the vortex. I encourage anyone who is interested to reach out to one of the many homeless services to learn more. I recently had the privilege to learn more about the system and the great work that is being done through SEARCH Homeless Services (http://www.searchhomeless.org/), but there is still so much more to be done by every one of us daily.

Love and blessings.
