This challenge is part of an continuous fundraising effort where I set goals and challenges for myself and raise funds for Going for Old CIC.

July 2021.  I will be taking part in the Lakeland 100 which is a 105 miles loop around the Lake District with 22,500 feet of ascent.  It has the additional challenge of being just six weeks since finishing the 62@62 challenge and we're in the middle of a heatwave.

June 2021.  To mark the year in which I will be 62 years old I have decided to undertake a run visiting 62 Lake District Peaks in 62 hours. These peaks are all 2500 feet or over and this will take place in June 2021.

I started running at the age of 53 and have since undertaken various ultra-running challenges, but this will be the toughest yet.  I am known as “The Running Granny” and I am raising awareness of health and ageing. (www.therunninggranny.co.uk ) You’ll be able to follow my progress in training, including some other major challenges by following this website or the social media links on there.

All monies raised will be used to develop Going for Old CIC (GFO), a social enterprise aiming to encourage, motivate and inspire people to make small, positive lifestyle choices to improve their physical and mental health throughout life.

Why am I doing this?

Our physical and mental health are the most important assets we have. Problems arising in either can have significant consequences for all areas of our life, from relationships to employment to general enjoyment of life.

Prior to 2020, the NHS already had significant funding and staff shortage crises, and was struggling to cope with demand. Much of this demand is due to an enormous growth in the number of people with obesity, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart and lung disease, and depression, all of which have an adverse impact on quality of life. These conditions are largely preventable and, even if you have one, there things you can do to slow any deterioration or even reverse the condition

The Covid-19 pandemic has shown us that those with ill health conditions are more likely to suffer more severely.  Furthermore the cost to the country and the impact on the NHS of dealing with this virus has led to very significant backlogs in the number of patients awaiting non-urgent medical treatments and surgeries.

Your contribution will help GFO to develop a trusted resource of health and wellbeing information. We also aim to provide opportunities to support self-improvement in lifestyle areas such as what we eat and drink, and social and physical activity through engaging in 'challenges' for long term personal change.

If we can reduce the growth in preventable ill health conditions then, as well as benefiting ourselves, we can help our NHS to continue to deliver all the services we would like for future generations.
