On October 15, 2012, my mom was diagnosed with stage three, non-small cell lung cancer and has since been spending all her time in and out of the hospital. For the past six months, she has been receiving chemotherapy and radiation treatment. This led to shrinkage of the cancer on her right side, which led to us being hopeful that she was slowly but surely headed in the right direction and potentially going to be cured.
Unfortunately, in March 2013, we learned that the cancer spread to the left side very quickly and significantly affected her heart and ability to breathe. Since her left lung has collapsed completely, she is now being supported by five liters of oxygen daily.
Shortly after her initial diagnosis, we found out that the cancer had spread through her lymph nodes (the tumor being the size of a fist in her throat). She has spent the last 21 days in the hospital receiving assistance just to breathe, which also led to her being diagnosed with pneumonia and COPD.
On January 1, 2014, my mom was discharged from the hospital into hospice care at home. Battling the cancer is painful enough for all of us and the burden of financial expenses over the past 15 months are heavily weighing on my mom and our entire family. The stress is at times too much for her to bear. Since insurance does not provide coverage for all of her treatment, there is a significant burden on the family, which has led us to considering selling our family home in an effort to pay for as much of it ourselves as we can. Sadly, we know that her days are numbered and there is no cure for the cancer, but to know that we can help reduce her stress over the financial matters would be greatly appreciated.
