One sentence can change your life.For some, that sentence is, “You’re hired!” after a long job search. For others it can be, “I love you,” when you’re searching for signs that tell you he’s the one. For our family, it was hearing these words. “The diagnosis is Guillian-Barre Syndrome.”Earlier this month, Ken and his wife, Anayanci, received this life-changing news after Ken was hospitalized with very scary symptoms. Through testing, it was discovered that Ken had been diagnosed with GBS, an rare disorder where the immune system attacks the nerves in the body. Guillian-Barre Syndrome—or GBS as its commonly referred to—damages the peripheral nervous system, and the cranial nerves. It results in a Gradual Block of Sensation, which threatens the respiratory system. Ken has been hospitalized since August 12 but was recently moved to assisted care. This convalescent period will help our family determine whether Ken will be able to receive in-home assistance or need to move to a skilled nursing facility. Both long-term care options Ken is facing are very costly, and the family is in serious need of assistance with medical expenses.
