Project Hispaniola

We are a group of ten first-year and second-year medical students from the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio planning a medical mission trip to the Dominican Republic in May 2014. We are thankful to have this opportunity to help in a region where health care is desperately needed. Each year, our organization, Project Hispaniola, connects patients in impoverished areas to the medical care they need.

Project Hispaniola is fortunate to have a partnership with Buen Samaritano Hospital in La Romana and medical students from the Universidad Central del Este. Under the direction of Dr. Ruth Berggren, we will set up and work in clinics in the bateys to provide care for the local inhabitants. We will also provide the medical supplies and medicine for these clinics, where we expect to screen upwards of 500 patients. In addition to these clinics, we will be working with a program in La Romana that helps educate and prepare teen mothers for taking care of their newborns. We will provide these young, soon-to-be moms with baby kits.

However, in order for this medical trip to become a reality, our team is responsible for all the preparations of the trip and all the funds to cover necessary expenses. Our team is aware of the responsibility we are taking on and we ensure that our efforts provide real benefit to the communities we serve.

The total cost of the medical trip will be $20,000. Realizing that we cannot achieve our goals without the help of our community and the aid of generous sponsors, we humbly ask for your consideration in supporting Project Hispaniola.
