Kendrick Teach Ayiti (YEAR 2)

When I came to serve in Haiti it was August 2018. It was the most beautiful experience to return to a motherland I never knew. As a Haitian American New Yorker to say that living in Ayiti was different than the US was an understatement. After the first year of teaching 4th grade at Lycée Jean Baptiste Point DuSable in St. Marc, Haiti, I was able to learn about my people, culture, and life. It humbled my approach & took me out of my comfort zone. I grew as a person and as an educator. I was a sponge soaking up all of the knowledge. Everything was all good during the school year until PEYI LOK! This PEYI LOK literally meaning “country lock” was when the country went on lockdown. These were periods in 2018-2020 where the people were protesting the economic situation in Haiti, corruption & President Jovenel Moise’s lack of leadership. No school, no church, no businesses, etc. The organization evacuated the staff off of school grounds via helicopter during this time. The roads were blocked so much that we had to take a helicopter from St. Marc to Port Au Prince. Upon our return to school 2 weeks later after Peyi Lok had cooled down, we lost the school’s founding architect, Filipe Fernandes. He was shot and killed as he pulled into the front gates of our school around 10am traumatizing my students and colleagues. We were all teaching when the gunshots went off. Despite the trials & tribulations of the first year, we were able to have a successful school year because we made it through! Unfortunately the second school year was cut short for me and the rest of the foreign staff due to the inability of the school being able to provide security/safety. We were officially let go in December 2019. Thank you to everyone who supported. This past year teaching in Ayiti was filled with ups and downs, but it has taught me valuable lessons on life. I am excited to be preparing for my second year of teaching 4th grade in St. Marc, Ayiti at Lycée Jean-Baptiste Pointe DuSable. HUGE THANKS to everyone who reached out to donate to my cause, last August 2018.

Now I am reaching out to everyone once again! I have partnered with a few members of the Pont Leocan community to start an after school program called World Happiness Professional Institute. I currently serve as the Co-founder/English instructor. This after-school program will instruct students in French, English, Dance with plans of adding computer science, plumbing, and other classes in the future.
