For those who don't know, I have Stage IV Metastatic Colon Cancer that has spread to other parts of my body. This is my 7th year in stage 4 and on various kinds of chemotherapy, immunotherapy and clinical trial drugs.
First diagnosed with Stage 2 colon cancer in 2012 I had a baseball-sized tumor removed that would have killed me within 2 or 3 months. At age 50 it was my first colonoscopy that discovered the cancer. At the time I could not work and had no insurance from my previous job as an Interpretive Ranger at Fall Creek Falls State Park. My savings were depleted, and I had to borrow money to help pay for the bills.
After that I was able to work part time in the greenhouse business until 2015 when I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. The cancer had spread to various places. The chemotherapy was harsh, strong and unforgiving. I also had to wear a pump at home that continued to infuse medication into the port in my chest for several days at a time.
Now suddenly I have had to install an ADA compliant shower, widen doorways and knock down walls as a result of a clinical trial I was in last summer that put me in on a walker inside the home and in a wheelchair when going to treatment as well as being put on oxygen, due to fluid build-up around my lungs that had to be drained every 7 days. The shower cost was $2,000 not including installation.
I live in an old mobile home I bought from my dad before he died just over 2 years ago. It sits on my sister's property. It seems to be falling apart around me.The place is old, leaky and lots of subfloor showing, but I will need a wheelchair in the future and have to be ready. I looked into a handicapped house (wide hallways, doorways, bathroom, ramps, etc.) left to a cousin by her aunt last year when she died. Then I realized there was no way I could ever afford to buy a house.
In the past few days my 23-year old heating and cooling system has deteriorated beyond use. Now I have had to borrow $9,000 to have it replaced, with no way of paying it off. I have 12 months to repay the loan before interest in the amount of 24% begins to build up.
It burdens my soul to ask for donations. My whole life has disappeared before me little by little, slowly moving from an active hard worker to someone who has to have a days rest after riding to the doctor's office. But I thank anyone who can help with all my heart and soul. And I will remember you in my prayers for every single day I have left on this earth.
