Hello, my name is Jessie, and I am fundraising for medical expenses for our cat Felix.
Felix started showing signs of lethargy and discomfort late Friday, March 11th. It was obvious that he was not quite his usual self, and we made the decision the following morning to admit him to the emergency animal hospital because the vet Felix usually sees was closed for the weekend. One of the most challenging pieces of this story was (due to Covid) not being allowed inside the building to be alongside our guy.
We spent the next few hours outside in our car anxiously awaiting an update of any kind. Finally, we spoke with a Doctor who had taken a blood test and listened as she explained that a liver enzyme was about ten times greater than normal levels should be and she strongly suggested that Felix stay admitted through the weekend on IV fluids so that he could see a specialist Monday morning that could perform a thorough ultrasound. The doctor threw around some pretty scary words but said that they could not be certain of a diagnosis without more information that could be provided through the ultrasound. Though it was very painful to leave him there overnight and through the rest of the weekend, we agreed that we wanted Felix to be monitored by the experts so that we could assure he was getting the care that he needed until we could receive more answers.
Monday afternoon we were able to fetch Felix from Emergency with the diagnosis of Cholangiohepatitis. Cholangiohepatitis is a common form of liver disease that can affect cats of any age or breed. Cats with this disease develop inflammation of their liver and bile ducts which causes pain and inflammation in their abdomen. From what we are gathering, the prognosis for feline cholangiohepatitis is unpredictable "If diagnosed at an early stage of the disease, some cats with the suppurative form of the disorder may respond well to antibiotic therapy and eventually return to normal". At this point, we are monitoring Felix at home and waiting to see how he responds to the first round of antibiotics, pain medication, apatite stimulants, and anti-nausea pills. Hopefully, when we bring Felix in to see his regular vet next Monday, we will have more answers and a better idea of how to move forward with his treatment.
This situation took us by total surprise, as Felix has been very active and playful keeping up with his little sis Moxie. We have maxed out our care credit and credit cards, but when asked where I wanted to put a "cap" on care expenses, I could not put a price tag on my kitty's life. As a pet parent, I want to do whatever I can to make sure that Felix can get the best care that he needs to make him as comfortable as possible while we are navigating this challenge.
Thank you to everyone who has reached out and donated to our cause. Felix is such a joy to our lives and an important part of our little fam-meow-ly. All proceeds will go directly to emergency room bills, medications, and continued care, including checkups, ultrasounds, blood testing, and supplements. Davy, Felix, and I are extremely grateful for the support and hope to pay it forward someday.
