In August 2007, at the age of 34, Derek and his wife (Larri) sat in a cold patient room at Urology Specialists of the Carolinas, as they awaited the results of the biopsy. They had no idea that the results that they would receive would change their lives forever. (Positive for Prostate Cancer)
As they sat there together, interlocked in tears and afraid of what this diagnosis meant, they knew that this would take faith, hope and strength to overcome. It began with solicited prayers and the wisdom to seek out the best surgeon to Dr. Judd Moul at DUKE!
Dr. Moul came highly recommended; director of prostate cancer at Duke University and the Division of Chief at Duke University and National Physician of the Year Award....just to mention a few. His presence at the initial visit at Duke helped to ease tension and assured us that we had made an excellent decision because God had placed Derek in good hands.
On October 31, 2007, early in the morning, Derek's wife (Larri), mother (Saundra), mother-in-law (Yvonne), sister-in-law (Aliza) and close friends (Jim & Hassan) were by his side, as we said a prayer and he was rolled back to surgery to have his life SAVED.
The surgery was an extreme success. There were many obstacles that stood in the way, but through faith and the power of prayer they have been Beat!
October 31, 2012 will mark Derek's 5 year Anniversary of being CANCER FREE!
