Meet Blake Barter….a spunky little six year-old who loves his family, baseball, hockey, fishing and just being a kid. He has an infectious smile, accompanied by a contagious laugh, and can’t help but make you feel that all is right with the world when you are with him.
Blake just graduated from grade one this past June and was enjoying a fun-filled summer but was also looking forward to September and the start of grade two.
Toward the end of July, Blake’s parents, Tara and William Barter, noticed that Blake’s eye seemed different – it was swollen, looked bruised and as if it had turned inward a little. Visits to the optometrist and doctor did not provide any answers and it was recommended that he attend the emergency room at Sick Kids. It was then that everything changed. Everything. Time stood still. CANCER…how could it be? He’s six...six years old and so much to learn and do and be and….SIX. Every parent’s worst nightmare…
In the days that followed, information started to flow. It had a name - rhabdomyosarcoma…a cancerous tumor that develops in the body's soft tissues. Cells from rhabdomyosarcomas are often fast growing and can spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body. Treatment usually includes chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.
Blake underwent many tests and scans and thankfully it was determined that the cancer had not spread…that, with the early detection and timely treatment, he could soon be on the road to a full recovery!!
Blake will be starting treatment at Sick Kids in the immediate future. There are many unknowns at this point…far too many to mention but what we do know is that Blake is a fighter…he is a strong kid with a tenacious personality, with an even stronger family supporting him through this.
As most of us unfortunately know, cancer has broad, long lasting implications for a family and can significantly impact a family’s ability to manage financially during treatment and recovery. Please help lighten the load, at least financially, for Blake’s family by donating any amount to this campaign. THANK YOU!!
