Help Rusty man get better
This is Rusty. He is an 11 year old Pomeranian, which is young for his breed. I have had him since he was 7 years old. When I first adopted him he had black skin with bald spots (alopica x) which I was able to take care of and get his hair to grow back to a full pom coat. Since having him he has come out of his shell quite a bit. He has learned to play with toys (well sort of), eat regular, healthy dog food, give kisses, snuggles and now loves to be held. Now he is a happy, go lucky, love everyone pom. Rusty may have Cushing's disease (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cushing's_syndrome), bladder and kidney stones that that are causing an on going Urinary Tract Infection and can only be removed surgically, calcium deposits in his right eye and the start of renal failure. His hair no longer grows, he has 2 fused disks in his neck that cause constant pain (not correctable). We give pain meds only when needed since they also damage his kidneys.
There are many tests that he needs to verify his Cushing's so he can receive the correct treatment.
Just an idea of some of these tests: -the ACTH test which is the next one for him is almost $400 and will require him to spend a few hours at the vet getting blood drawn many times.
-A low dose dexamethasone test which will require more blood taken over a period of time ($300)
-An ultrasound to check his kidney function asa well as the stones in both his kidneys and bladder. This test will also look for tumors caused by a certain type of Cushing's ($200-$600)
The bladder and kidney stones, if not removed, can break apart and cause a blockage which will then require emergency surgery. Until the stones can be removed he will need regular xrays to check the stones ($150-$300). The surgery to remove the stones will range from $1200-$1700. He will need re-checks and maybe hospital stays during the healing as Cushing's greatly slows the healing process.Then there is medicine, over night stays, special food, bloodwork to check blood cell count and other organ function.
Any donations not used will be donated to a rescue to help heal and re-home other dogs who need a chance.
