Please donate to support Aida Gamez and family.
The fundraising focus will support her family Aida leaves behind and in rebuilding their foundation after the devastating diseases that wreaked havoc on her and the family the last three years. She passed away from complications related to lupus, pulmonary hypertension, scleroderma, cirrhosis, and osteoporosis a few weeks ago.
Aida was a student at UCLA when she met her love, Jose. After a whirlwind romance, they eloped and the couple continued to serve the UCLA community through her work in science education and his work in associated student food services for the last 20+ years.
Aida was a passionate and dedicated educator, serving hundreds of students in the Los Angeles Unified School District, first at Thomas Starr King in the Los Feliz/Silverlake area and then at Young Oak Kim Academy in Koreatown. She was a mentor teacher, supporting many outstanding teachers through the IMPACT teacher preparation program at UCLA and PhD educator candidate program, USC Body Engineering Los Angeles GK-12 (BELA program), through the National Science Foundation (NSF).
She leaves her two boys behind, Joel, 12 (6th grade), Joseph, 13 (7th grade). Joseph and Joel are incredibly loving, smart, affectionate, and active young boys. Aida was proud to see Joseph cross the finish line at the LA Marathon last month. Joel excels at chess and soccer. Both boys spent countless hours tending to their momma at home and at her hospital bed, never leaving her side.
The Gamez family has suddenly gone from a two-income to a single income household and the boys worry about moving from the only home they have known.
Donations will go toward the following, but not limited to:
- Cremation services
- Bills associated with transportation, medical equipment, and other items not provided by insurance
- Mortgage
- Supporting the boys’ education related expenses
- Academic and recreation activities and related expenses
