Let's Get Joyce Back in the Garden!

Donation protected
On Dec. 9, 2013 Joyce Morningstar walked out of her house to clear the first snow of the year. She slipped on the ice and fell on her left arm, breaking her arm and shattering her elbow. She has been told she may need an elbow replacement. She and her husband, Lee Barron, do not currently have health insurance.

Joyce is a master organic gardener, herbalist, friend, and neighbor. She is always outside doing something in her garden, rain or shine, hot or cold. She is a yoga teacher, tarot reader, and community activist. She is left handed.

Joyce lights up a room when she walks into it and makes you smile. Her energy is positive and infectious. A long-time resident of Berkeley Springs, WV, she has long been active in the local arts and alternative living community.

This is her hour of need. Joyce has already incurred substantial medical bills. She and Lee were referred to out-of state university hospitals specializing in this type of surgery, but none of them were willing to treat her. She was told that the window for surgical repair was rapidly closing. She and her husband left for West Virginia University Hospital in Morgantown, WV at dawn on Dec. 24th, 2013. We don't know how this story will end. But we'll keep you posted.

All funds raised for Joyce will be placed in a trust created for her benefit, and used to pay medical and related expenses. If Joyce is able to get insurance in the future, the funds will cover cost not paid by insurance. If you would like more information about the trust, please contact me directly.

Update 12/25/13. Great news! Joyce is scheduled for surgery next Friday morning (12-27) at WVU in Morgantown. She said the all staff members there were wonderful - caring and professional. Thank you to everyone for your generous support! We'll keep you updated.

Update 12/29/13. More good news! Joyce reports that the surgery went well and she is now recovering at home. "We came home yesterday....they took the cast off after 1 day and they assure me that I am OK, but I feel pretty vulnerable. After a rousing pep talk with two physical therapists, they put me on a regimen of exercises 3x a day. They want me to use the arm as much as possible. Now the healing work begins.....it hurts alot but I have good pain meds.....not going anywhere for awhile....love the emails and loving thoughts and prayers. "

Update 1/1/14. Joyce writes "Happy New Year Everyone! A lovely day for a bath and reading. Took my bandages off this morning so my arm can breathe....yay, healing nicely. I am amazed every day how much more mobility I have. I can almost straighten my arm out! I am also amazed at how many people have cooked for us, cleaned for us, visited us, and sent so much love and support. Thank you all for being amazing! Nice to be in a world of love......"
