Lorenzo’s Journey

Lorenzo was born in the spring of this year (2018). He was very welcomed since he has two older sisters (8 years and 2 years of age). He is a very good baby, with a very pleasant personality. He smiles a lot especially at his siblings.

At 10 weeks of age, Lorenzo’s mom noticed a small area on the front of his scalp, two small pimple-looking welts. After a week or so, that area became a scab. His mom pointed this area out to his pediatrician. After a few visits the area still did not heal so he was taken to a dermatologist. The first visit there ended with steroid cream to his head and “Don’t worry” from the doctor. Weeks later the area still did not heal. He was taken to a second dermatologist who immediately said the area needed to be biopsied. So it was. About a week later, it was felt he had a form of histiocytosis (abnormal cells). Lorenzo was sent to an oncologist. It was she who broke the news that he had a very rare form of cancer called Langerhan’s Cell Histiocytosis. It was then the nightmare became the most scary.

Since his diagnosis he has undergone lab tests, skeletal x-rays, sonograms, CT scans, an attempted MRI and finally in September he underwent a partial thymectomy. Each test revealed another area of concern. As Langerhan’s Cell Histiocytosis can be internal and external, each test was to look for more lesions. There were questionable shadows and abnormal blood tests, the worst of which were seven lesions on his thymus (a gland in his chest). The results were considered ominous and he was sent to a surgeon. His results were also shared with LCH specialists in Texas. He needed surgery and they prepared for the worst.

His Christening date was moved up to before the surgery, everyone was so understanding. He was blessed, and the word went out like a virus that we needed all the prayers in the world and we got them! Relatives, friends, friends of relatives and friends on Long Island, in Queens, Brooklyn, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida and Europe! The outpouring of love and prayers was overwhelming! Lorenzo was Baptized on the anniversary of St. Padre Pio becoming a Saint! Boy, did he get bombarded with prayers hoping for a miracle!

And so it was granted!! Lorenzo came through his surgery like a champ. One half to three quarters of his thymus was removed. He had IV lines and chest tubes and he spent two days in ICU, then PEDS oncology, and then he came home to us.

That very evening, we received the news that his pathology did not contain any LCH!! What?! All the doctors were stunned and amazed! There is no explanation except that we were granted a miracle!! So many tears of joy, they can never be counted. So much gratitude for the prayers that stormed Heaven over these past few months. Thank you and most especially thank God!!

These results leave us with testing lab work every month, and CT scans and sonograms every two to three months (we’ll take it!) but no chemo! We were told that LCH can return at any time. Please may the prayers continue!

Now we come to the most humbling part of our story. With high copays, a huge deductible, and losing time and pay for days missed at work, we have run out of funds. It is so hard and so embarrassing to have to ask for help. This family bought a new home in the spring just before Lorenzo was born. There is no reserve to go to.

We need financial help. We pray you find it in your hearts to assist us with this situation in any small way you can. With testing continuing and the deductible starting over in January, we are and will be in quite a bind. The testing will go on for a year as previously described and will continue to go on after that in less frequent intervals if all goes well.

God bless you all, and thank you!

I have been asked to add the following to this story, by the GoFundMe Team: I am Lorenzo's grandmother. The funds
collected from this campaign will be used to pay medical bills (hospital stay, consultant bills, lab bills, radiology testing bills etc.) and possibly to assist with mortgage payments, if necessary.  As soon as I figure out how to do it, I will assign my son/daughter-in-law (Joseph and Kristin Pagano - parents of Lorenzo) as beneficiaries to this account so they can withdraw the money from the account as bills come in.    Thank you once again for your consideration.
