Dear Friends and Family,
Thank you so much for your help with sending Eunice to college for the next 2 years with the $3,125 we raised. Now I am looking to raise $3,000 more to send Lydiah, my other research assistant, to college this year, for a total of $6,000. Lydiah is in the photo (with notebook) with myself (guess) and Eunice (clockwise from Lydiah) above while we were doing research on women's struggles in Tanzania last summer.
As you know, I am an anthropology professor at the George Washington University in Washington, DC. And if you don't know, I will soon be an anthropology professor at Southern Methodist University in Fall 2014!
Lydiah worked with me for 4 weeks last summer as my translator and research assistant, and I grew to love and admire her very much. The women we were trying to interview really opened up to her and connected to her on a very rich level.
Lydiah wants to go to university at an excellent school, St. Augustine University of Tanzania, and has been admitted. To receive a Bachelor's Degree, she needs our help of $5000 total. At this moment, I am hoping to raise $3,000 to get her through the first two years of school.

Here is Lydiah's story and dreams of the future in her own words:
My names are Wambo Lydiah Achieng'. I was born in the year 1991 in the slums of Soweto in the East side of Nairobi, Kenya. I am the first born in the family of two, I and my brother Rodgers. I come from a family that is not that stable. My mother was a fish monger while my father worked at masonry. My mother worked very hard to ensure that we get basic needs, unlike my father who spent the little money he made drinking alcohol, ''chang'aa,'' coming very late at night, abusing my mother, biting her, and when given food, he complains of eating the same food and hits my mother with the food.
I took my primary education at Kwa Watoto Center and School. It is a center that is targeting the more vulnerable people in the community. Under the mercy of the Lord, I was enrolled and got a sponsor who payed my fees up to the secondary level. Despite the ups and downs, I managed to get an average mean grade of C+d uring my last two years. When I was in Form Three, my mother got sick. I had to remain behind and look after her, but the condition was becoming worse because there was no special attention. My dad was doing nothing about it, neither did my dad's side, or anybody. She was taken to her mother and my grand father asked for a loan for her treatment she was taken to a local hospital in Maranagu. She was then referred to KCMC Kilimanjaro Christian and Medical Center but there the condition was becoming worse and the bill too much to manage. She was discharged but 3 days after discharge she died on 1st January 2012. But since the beginning of my mum's condition,death and burial, no one from my father's side came, neither did my father appear. Currently am staying with my mom's sister and I feel like such a burden to her because she has to take care of me and also my brother who is still in secondary school despite her low income.
I would like to take international relations. I want to be a self independent lady, to be my self, and work very hard to help my brother and the society at large.
In 5 years to come, I would like to have a masters degree in international relations,in the first 4 years to have a bachelor degree and the remaining 2 years to have a masters degree,to get a nice job, and continue with the PhD. Thank you.

With our help, Lydiah will first take a bachelor's in public relations and will continue studying for her PhD in international relations. I have no doubt that Lydiah can accomplish this and much more. She is just as brilliant as my best American students, focused and determined. She is fluent in Swahili and English. And I see her as a future leader of her generation, truly.
Let's help her make her mother proud.
I hope to raise the $3000 Lydiah needs to fund her schooling and boarding fees for the next two years (a big motivation to work hard) by June 1st.
I have family on the ground in Arusha who did a wonderful job transferring money to the university and helping me stay connected to Eunice. They will be in Tanzania at least two more years and are excited to help Lydiah, as well. In addition, I will provide you with an update every 3 months on her progress through school.
